Tiered stands: what they are actually for
A three-tier stand is bought for afternoon tea and then used for everything else, which is the point.
They buy you table space
The real function is vertical. A tiered stand serves the same quantity in a third of the footprint, which matters on a crowded table.
That is why they earn their place at a buffet far more than at a formal dinner.
Load heaviest at the bottom
Stability comes from the base. Savouries and anything dense go on the lower tier, light and delicate items above.
Loading the top tier heavily is how stands tip when someone reaches past them.
Porcelain and metal frames
Porcelain plates on a metal frame are the common construction. Check whether the plates lift off — ones that do are far easier to wash and to use separately.
Fixed stands look neater and are more awkward to clean.
Not just for tea
They work for breakfast pastries, a cheese course, cupcakes, and as a bathroom or dressing-table organiser out of season.
A stand that only comes out twice a year is a stand that lives in a cupboard.
Washing
Hand wash anything with a gold or metallic trim. Dishwasher heat and detergent dull metallic finishes quickly and irreversibly.
The plates alone are often dishwasher safe when the assembled stand is not.
Two tiers or three
Two tiers is more stable and fits under most cupboards. Three has presence and needs somewhere to live.
If storage is tight, two tiers gets used more often, which is the better outcome.
Serving warm food
Most tiered stands are not designed for hot dishes and the frames conduct heat. They are for room-temperature service.
Anything that needs to stay hot belongs on a platter with a cover.
What it costs
